On Friday, March 28th, from 2-3 p.m., the Simcoe County District School Board participated in "Earth Hour."  At Rama Central, we turned out the lights, turned off the computers, and engaged in a variety of activities.  Some classes went on with business as usual, using just the light filtering in through windows to illuminate their workspace; others engaged in special projects to commemorate the event.

For example:

  • Mrs. Turnbull's and Mrs. Wilson's Grade One classes rescheduled Science class to coincide with Earth Hour, and engaged in a lesson on energy. After working with the lights off for an hour, they concluded that on bright days we don't need to waste energy by turning on classroom fluorescent lights!

  • Mrs. Halbot's Grade 3 class discussed the concept of Earth Hour and what they love most about living on Planet Earth. Then they engaged in an hour-long "Art in the Dark" activity, during which they painted aztec-style pictures on round paper plates.

  • Mrs. Ross' Grade 7/8 class went outside and used "biofuels" (body-energy) to power basketball and skipping activities.
